TEDDIES FOR TRAGEDIES
Knitted teddies bringing comfort and hope
to children around the world
WHERE DO THEY GO? To refugee camps, orphanages, children’s charities and hospitals, in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and South America …. in the UK …. wherever there is a child who needs a soft toy of their own to love.
HOW IT BEGAN In 1986 in Somerset, “Superted”, a washable knitted teddy, was added to a consignment of medicines going to a refugee camp in Sudan. The doctor replied “For some children, these teddies do more good than medicines, giving them hope”. The teddy knitting began and then a bag was added for the teddy to be kept in, increasing the play value.
HOW TO HELP If you would like to help either by knitting teddy bears or by making the drawstring bags please get in touch:
Mary Leech 01483 225595 maryleech@hugginscottage.co.uk
I can provide you with the pattern to knit the bears.
OR visit our website teddiesfortragedies.org.uk for the knitting pattern; for the Teddies-for-Tragedies latest newsletter, and much more information.
There are distributors all around the UK who send off 100’s of teddies every year. In recent months I have been able to send 50 teddies to a children’s school/hospital in Sierra Leone; 75 to a rural community in Uganda; over 200 to Social Services in Guildford, London and Leeds for their Christmas ‘shoebox appeal’ and for their work with displaced and disturbed children.
